Rising anew upon the Stones of the old - Sandra Orme
"Initially I wanted to find a way to capture the current transformation and restoration at the crescent. At the moment you can only catch glimpses of the building behind fences or through scaffolding. I wanted to recreate that feeling of seeing it unclearly and only when framed by other shapes and spaces.
I was immediately drawn to the view from under the arches opposite The George Mansions. From there, the curve of The Crescent is wonderful- all sweeping lines and dramatic perspectives -though half hidden by scaffolding and modern fencing. But it was all framed in turn by the Georgian arches. So you have this interesting layered juxtaposition of old, with new on top, framed again by old.
However, as I was working on the piece I became completely absorbed by the scaffolding itself and the way it in turn creates a rhythm and structure within which further patterns, shadows and light are created.
From being almost an 'add on' it became my focus. So the work evolved as I was doing it- from a starting point of a beautiful building shrouded in metal, to finding beauty in the building works themselves."
