New for 2020 – A Blank Canvas This year the Spa Prize will be seven years old. The competition began in 2014 with only 67 entries. Since then the event has grown and we now regularly attract over 150 artists many of whom have gone on to bigger things. Adebanji Alade won the Sketchbook Prize in 2014 and is now Vice President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. He is the author of The Addictive Sketcher and makes regular television appearances. Andrew Horrod, winner in 2018, was elected a member of Chelsea Art Society in 2019. He has won numerous competitions countrywide and is a Spa Prize regular. Haidee-Jo Summers won the main competition in 2014 and both her paintings and painting courses are very much in demand. She has gone on to win a host of awards and also writes regularly for The Artist magazine for which she is an editorial consultant. Haidee-Jo has kindly agreed to be one of our judges this year and it is a great pleasure to welcome her back. In the spirit of growth and progress we are introducing a few key changes for 2020. The competition is now the Buxton Spa Art Prize – an important clarification of what the Prize is all about! Perhaps more importantly we will not be allocating locations. Artists will be free to choose their own site within a one mile radius of The Pavilion Gardens (see map). Artists may still submit more than one entry and Spa Prize team members will be on hand during registration to offer advice on locations for those who request it. So – Choose your location, choose your medium. Think big or think small. An entire building or a hidden corner. A whole woodland or a solitary tree. Traditional or abstract. Minimal or elaborate. Expansive and sweeping or intricate and compact. Take your inspiration from the tiniest detail or the largest vista. The beautiful spa town of Buxton and its surrounding countryside provide ample scope for all kinds of fabulous artwork. Why not spend some time exploring the area before settling on you final location? Remember, we accept work in any 2D medium apart from photography. CategoriesBuxton Spa Art Prize 2020
